Enveloped in dark and rich materials, this interior is fit for a king. The Narofsky designed home is both parts chic and rustic; nothing too contemporary and not too cluttered.

The home features wood paneled walls with a large sliding barn door, natural stone floors and dark obsidian colored interior stone facades. Large skylights bring a glow to the otherwise dark core of the home, and the detailed wood planked ceiling provides an added value of depth and dimension. The bedroom is also a dark and peaceful retreat, with touches of metal and filtered natural light to keep the harsh materials feeling soft. Similar to an urban cabin, this space is a beautiful zen retreat in the upscale area of New York.

Beautiful furniture design can really add dimension to a space, and this especially rings true when no two pieces are alike. Incorporated Studio took it upon themselves to reuse Csaesarstone scraps for a truly unique table design.

By taking multiple pieces of the unused blocks and cutting them with water jets, the thin layered pieces of stone are theoretically able to be laminated into sheets. Each sheet would then be turned to a leg and assembled in a double X shape base. These completely creative ‘jacks’ looking bases are then topped with glass– but could easily have another style or shape top added per your choosing.

Belgian designers and architects Dethier added an amazing and illustrious metallic pod to the interior of this former bakery turned loft in Liége. The ‘Kempart Loft’ is a beautiful and open space that features whites, light wood and open window views. The otherwise entirely open plan ended up being partitioned off by this new structure within the home, and the result is almost surreal.

It may look like an airstream trailer landed smack dab in the center of this living space, and essentially– that’s what happened. But the pod serves a few purposes. Other than being green and orange/yellow lit, there are two bathrooms within as well as storage space and it also houses the television along an exterior cutout. The separation of space is created by this American gesture, unexpected yet completely welcome in this art based home.

The awe inspiring illusions crafted by MC Escher still live on today, and they’ve been incorporated into architecture and now of course an intricate wood flooring detail. Created by Arbore flooring of Spain, this floor pattern is truly one of a kind.

This Madrid home was completely renovated, and a part of the construction included a custom work by Arbore. The client requested the interlocking wood floor with inspirations drawn from the ‘Reptiles’ artwork by MC Escher. The flooring ended up going into one of the bathrooms of the residence, and there are a few shared photos of the installation of this one of a kind flooring.

Affordable and sustainable building is gaining traction all over the world, especially in places where modern building techniques are too expensive or unknown. In areas such as Rwanda, MASS Design Group has been working to not only provide the people with the things they need– but finding a way to create affordable homes and simultaneously create jobs.

These prototypical homes were make from compressed dirt brick that doesn’t need to be fired or use any harsh processes to harden. Molds were created to ensure that the bricks were laid sufficiently and provide support for the region that is prone to earthquakes. These small homes feature a small entry, 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom and living space. Small porch and garden areas are also provided since agriculture is a huge way of life in Rwanda. Originally built for doctors of the area, this sustainable method is being researched to further assist the natives in their living conditions.

Knobs, pulls, rods, faucets– it’s all been described as the jewelry of the home, and there’s no reason that everyone’s space shouldn’t have some.

Hardware is a beautiful thing, and it can shift the mood of a space ever so slightly, and inconspicuously. Have some ultra contemporary furniture that needs some toning down? Add some small vintage detailed knobs. Keep the elongated and linear feel of a kitchen going with bar pulls that extend the width of a drawer. Add some lucite for a glam feel. No matter the case, hardware can create some unsuspecting beauty in every twist and turn of the interior.

Living with roommates is inevitable at some point or another, and it’s a well known fact that there are rules and boundaries to abide by when co-habitating. For some households, one of these most common rules revolves around food. While some think that whatever is around for them to see and eat is free game– others don’t agree so much.

As a part of Electrolux’s Design Lab contest (held annually), Austrian designer Stefan Buchberger created the “Flatshare” fridge. Created as a modular piece for those who live with multiple people per flat– this fridge is made up of multiple components. Each tetris-type block stacks on top of the other to create individually customizable refrigerators that ultimately stack up to look like a single unit. But in reality, each user has their own privacy and there’s no excuse to eat the last of someone else’s groceries.

Light and airy, Rudy Ricciotti‘s contemporary built and designed Bandol home is the perfect Summer getaway. The 3,800 square foot abode is home to multiple bedrooms and breathtaking Provençal views. Ricciotti worked in collaboration with Marchi Architectes, who took on some of the interior works, creating slatted built ins, and directing the laid back-artsy style.

With Marimekko style fabrics and bold mosaic tiled patterns in the bathrooms, the overall standout is still the long swimming pool that is built into the side facade and looks into the lower levels of the home. It’s built in such a way where the roof deck is adjacent, and those inside can view swimmers and still enjoy the landscape views. The rest of the interior is not so much focused on anything private, but more of wide open space and less compartmentalization.

This may not be the first seashell house we’ve seen, but, it certainly is another creative take on living near the ocean. Situated in Isla de Mujeres in Mexico, the two adjacent “Moon Shell” and “Queen Conch” titled spaces share a pool and ocean views. Architect Eduardo Ocampo designed the home, and it’s now available as a vacation rental through Air BnB.

The smaller (Moon Shell) built area houses its own bathroom and bedroom, while the larger of the two boasts a kitchenette, sitting area and another full size bed and bath. Each area is completely decked out in seashell decor, with conch shower heads, shell decorated mirrors, and even a giant shell bed sculpted out of the home. A truly magnificent site to see!

Quilts are seeing more popularity in recent years than they had previously; and with their resurgence comes an ingenious, more updated design approach by Haptic Lab based out of Brooklyn. The designers at Haptic hand craft their quilts and make plenty of modern designs for a new thought process of the modern day heirloom. From cities to constellations– they can do it all.

Their Constellation Quilt is featured right now on Kickstarter, and it’s got a unique story as well as its own DIY kit where you can craft your very own quilt with an affordable pattern. So much attention to detail is taken to the overall design– and the constellation is a particular October night “around the 40th parallel in the Northern Hemisphere.” With a nice size of 5-feet-by-5-feet and a luxe turquoise dyed sateen cotton, this quilt makes for a beautiful gift and cherished heirloom.
