Housing for students in Sweden can be a tough thing to find. For a temporary place, rent can be pricey. And with the amount of time that’s actually spent within the confines of a room– there’s not a whole lot of actual living space needed. Tengbom Architects created the “Smart Student Unit” to give those studying a beautifully green and functional place to reside.
Crafted from cross laminated wood, the unit comes with built in furnishings in a contemporary package. In only 100 square feet there is a dining area, kitchen, study desk, a swinging lounge, elevated sleeping quarters, bathroom and a small outdoor patio. Many of these spaces’ elements do double duty as furniture and structural components– but it is the perfect answer to form meeting function in a limited footprint.
And the built structure isn’t only limited to students. With small changes it can be used as a guest house, office or even hotel room. As of now, there is only one prototype, but 22 Smart Student Units are prepped for production and will be ready for their first student residents in 2014.
