Inspiration can be everywhere, even where you might least expect it. Though most might see pencils as a tool for creating art in the drawn or colored form– there are many artists out there who are utilizing pencils in their physical forms of artistry as sculptures.
Two artists in particular are standouts in this field, both with completely different and unique techniques for sculpting. Australian artist Lionel Bawden and American inspiration Jessica Drenk have been working in this medium for awhile now, and their approaches (while varying greatly) are equally as inspirational.
Lionel Bawden utilizes more geometric shapes and colored pencils to create pattern, texture and depth. Jessica Drenk creates a more organic feel with her standard graphite pencils and the carved result looks like a piece of driftwood found in nature.
