Easter is a very widely celebrated holiday in various parts of the world, with plenty of countries taking their celebrations further than just church and an egg hunt. In Antigua, people celebrate Semana Santa to honor the religious holiday; and one of the ways to celebrate includes sawdust created ‘alfombras’ or carpets.
Each pattern is completely different, with different dyed colors of sawdust intertwined with other natural materials such as flowers, pine needles and miscellaneous fruits and plant material. Many, many hours in a group setting are spent in order to get these ‘alfombras’ carefully in order. And once everything is set in, the sawdust is kept from drying out and blowing away with a watering every now and again.
