London’s House of Flags by AY Architects

As London played host to this year’s 2012 Summer Olympic Games, it’s only natural that someone, somewhere would pay homage to the multicultural melting pot that the world famous city was during those few weeks of the games. AY Architects put together a beautifully constructed “House of Flags” to represent the combination of such cultures in the city just near the world famous Big Ben clock.

There are 206 birch plywood panels total, each painted with the colors and patterns of each country’s flag. All of these were then stacked on top of one another just like a life-sized house of cards in Parliament Square. Instead of the worries of wind and weather knocking down the flags, the pieces all interlocked like a giant jigsaw puzzle and created an interactive installation that could be explored from the inside and outside.
