Building facades are a great way to extend an invite in, keep visitors at bay, or evoke emotion and attention for the sheer creativity alone. The Wintergarden shopping center in Brisbane, Australia is such a space that it perfectly sets itself apart from the traditional facades that sit next to it.
Designed by Studio 505, the faces of the building are constructed in layers of various cutouts, colors and elements (including spatial parameters for backlighting the structure at night). The studio had their own ideas in mind when coming up with this design wonder. A “multitude of intentions” – as they describe; to create an entertaining and engaging retail experience, a lifestyle destination and a ‘must-go-to’ meeting place and thoroughfare.
Combine three layers of cladding, three dimensional butterflies and some structural elements– and you’ve got a diversely intriguing facade drawing people in non stop.
