Making the most of space. That’s what NIO Architecten of the European country did when they created a set of flats just underneath an expressway in Hilversum, Netherlands. These multi-family residences are designed with the user in mind, and many drawbacks have already been addressed prior to the build out.

Noise has been limited, natural light concerns taken care of– you name the cons and they’ve probably been touched on a time or two in the past. There have been arguments over whether or not the location itself is ok, not just from a design standpoint but from a safety view. Justifiably so, The Netherlands likely gets a lot less traffic than say– Los Angeles or New York, but homes built just off of an express road could potentially create a safety hazard for inhabitants.
